2026 is proving to be a turning point for small and medium-sized enterprises and their relationship with artificial intelligence. According to a report published by LinkedIn, based on data from 160 million professionals and over 18 million small businesses on the platform, AI has ceased to be an experimental tool and has become a strategic asset capable of redefining business models, organisational structures and even entrepreneurial aspirations.

AI Lowers Barriers to Entrepreneurship

A particularly significant figure emerges from the report: half of the US small businesses surveyed stated that the spread of AI had led them to consider entrepreneurial paths they had not previously contemplated. AI automates repetitive tasks and improves operational efficiency, freeing up time and resources that founders can dedicate to innovation and relationship-building.

The report also records a 69% increase in the number of people who have added the title of “founder” to their LinkedIn profile — a signal that AI is concretely lowering barriers to entry into entrepreneurship.

A Competitive Equaliser

The majority of US small businesses already use AI in some form: from writing emails to summarising documents, from data analysis to strategy definition. 57% of small businesses believe that AI will improve their daily working life. The next step is what LinkedIn researchers call the shift from “experimentation to adoption”.

“AI has gone from being a tool to a strategic asset for small businesses that want to remain resilient and grow in 2026. By adopting AI, businesses can streamline operations, reduce costs and accelerate decision-making, creating room for innovation and relationship building.” — Sharat Raghavan, Economist and Director of Research at LinkedIn.

SMEs — which represent over 90% of all businesses worldwide and employ half of the global workforce — are therefore the terrain on which AI’s impact could be most significant in economic terms.

Authenticity as Competitive Advantage in the AI Era

A recurring theme in the report is the role of the human voice in the AI era. Many small businesses use AI to produce content, yet at the same time believe that real human voices remain fundamental to building trust. Almost 75% of respondents agree that audiences “don’t take information at face value — they verify it with people they trust”.

The most advanced SMEs are investing in community-driven content — created by employees, customers or industry experts — as a tool to strengthen credibility and relationships.

Networks and Relationships Matter More Than Ever

Small businesses recognise that human relationships matter more than ever in the AI era. Founders continue to seek advice from their professional networks to find new clients, make hiring decisions and receive strategic guidance. The report’s message is clear: to compete in 2026, SMEs must train their teams on AI and leverage it as an operational tool — keeping trust-building and authentic relationships at the centre of everything they do.
