In the first days of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an image went viral on social media allegedly showing a German fan dressed as Adolf Hitler in the stands during the Germany–Curaçao match on 14 June. The image is fake: according to a fact-check conducted by the AFP news agency, the photo was digitally altered from an authentic frame of the official broadcast footage.

How the Hoax Spread

The manipulated image was first published on X (formerly Twitter) on 14 June 2026, accompanied by the caption “Hitler was one of the greatest German fans today”. Within a few hours, it had spread to Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Reddit, with captions in Albanian, Portuguese, Thai, Chinese, Spanish and Persian.

The graphic details of the image correspond to the Germany–Curaçao match, which ended 7–1 — the Caribbean island’s historic first World Cup appearance — played in Houston.

The Verification: Comparison with the Original Video

The AFP team compared the viral image with the official match footage published by FOX Sports, the tournament’s official broadcaster in the United States. In the exact match of frame and pose of the surrounding fans, the place of the alleged Hitler figure shows a blonde-haired, bearded fan holding a German flag and celebrating after the penalty converted by Kai Havertz. The face had therefore been replaced through digital manipulation.

Several accounts that shared the image describe themselves as meme or satire pages, suggesting that the initial spread may have occurred in a parodic vein before being picked up as authentic by other users.

A Landmark Case of Disinformation in the AI Era

This episode fits into a broader context of growing concern about the ability of generative artificial intelligence to produce and spread false visual content quickly and convincingly. The manipulation of video frames is a technique that does not necessarily require sophisticated tools, yet can reach millions of people in a matter of hours by exploiting the speed of social media sharing.

The incident occurs while the 2026 World Cup — hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico — has already produced numerous authentic viral images, such as Japanese fans cleaning up litter after the match against the Netherlands, and a duck wearing a Mexico jersey. The context of global interest amplifies both the production of authentic content and that of manipulated material.

AFP has published further fact-checks on World Cup 2026 disinformation, available on its dedicated portal.
